Financial crime is becoming harder to separate from crime itself.
At the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) 2026 Summit in Edmonton, one subject came up more than any other in conversations at the Altia stand: financial crime. Chiefs told Altia’s Toby Langston that they were actively looking for ways to support financial investigations better.
A crime that doesn’t stay in its lane
It’s not hard to see why. Financial crime is no longer a neatly defined category of offending. Fraud crosses jurisdictions and international networks. Elder fraud and scams can reach victims remotely. Organized crime groups can move money through increasingly complex channels. And you’ll now find a financial element in an enormous range of investigations.
This shift was reflected elsewhere at CACP 2026. The program looked at cross-border investigations, organized crime and the growing importance of intelligence sharing and investigative coordination. It also addressed the reality that modern criminal investigations increasingly rely on digital evidence and technology.
For financial investigators, that creates a difficult combination: more data, more complexity, more connections to uncover – and constant pressure to reach reliable conclusions, fast.
Turning financial data into investigative insight
This is exactly where Altia’s Financial Investigation Toolkit comes in and can support investigative teams.
The Financial Investigation Toolkit was built specifically to help investigators uncover trends, patterns, and relationships in financial data. It combines financial investigation functionality with interactive dashboards and Power BI visualisations, making patterns and trends easier to identify, explore and communicate.
For teams, it means they no longer have to spend hours manually working through mountains of financial information. Instead, technology can structure and analyse that data and identify the transactions, connections and patterns that warrant closer attention.
The objective is simple: help investigators get from financial data to investigative insight faster.
Answering the questions that matter
Turning complicated datasets into intelligence that actually makes sense matters more and more as the scale and sophistication of financial crime grows.
Whether an investigation involves fraud, hidden assets, proceeds of crime, suspicious transactions or a wider offence with a financial trail, investigators need to be able to answer the fundamental questions:
- Where did the money come from?
- Where did it go?
- Who’s connected to it?
- What does the financial activity tell us about the wider investigation?
Technology should help them reach those answers more efficiently, not add another layer of complexity to their already heavy workload.
As scams become increasingly global, financial trails become more complex, and a financial dimension appears in more investigations, giving investigators the ability to quickly interrogate and understand financial data will only become more important.
