A New Approach to the Fentanyl Crisis

Despite ongoing law enforcement efforts, including crackdowns on cartels and drug smugglers, the Fentanyl trade continues to thrive due to high demand, economic incentives for traffickers, and the adaptability of supply chains.

The crisis is deeply rooted in society, originating with the over-prescription of opioids by pharmaceutical companies. As legal painkillers became restricted, users turned to heroin, then fentanyl, and now even more dangerous synthetic drugs. This shift exposes the failure of enforcement-heavy policies, which have not addressed the underlying issues of addiction.

While the U.S. government remains focused on punitive measures like border security and cartel arrests, public health solutions—such as wider Naloxone distribution, supervised consumption sites, and expanded addiction treatment—are proving more effective.

Tackling the fentanyl crisis requires a fundamental policy shift: treating addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal problem.
